Opportunities with India

The Prime Minister’s visit to India this week is a timely reminder of the importance to Australia of the subcontinent.

With a growing middle class amongst its large, young population, India offers us both trade and security opportunities.

The overwhelming majority of the world’s trade for the next century will pass through the Indo-Pacific.

As recent events indicate, this region of the world will also involve significant strategic challenges in coming years.

Australia has the opportunity of strengthening its relationships with a number of nations in the region with which we already have key partnerships. These include Japan, Singapore and India, along with the United States.

Ensuring freedom of navigation, both on the waters and in the air, is critical for our future prosperity.

Hence we need to redouble our efforts to pursue both free trade with India and closer defence arrangements.
