The Marriage Debate
The question of same-sex marriage has evoked strong emotions, and attracted considerable controversy over recent weeks and months. This debate has been to the fore in the Australian Parliament over the past week.
The Coalition parties reconfirmed the decision that the issue should be informed by a vote of the Australian people. This is what we promised Australians.
Regrettably, the Senate has again denied Australians the opportunity to vote in a compulsory plebiscite on the issue. As a consequence, the government has resolved to allow Australians to have their say on the matter through a postal vote.
Whatever their views, most people recognise that the proposed change in the definition of marriage is of great significance. The current understanding has existed across cultures and civilisations for millennia. It is appropriate that Australians have the opportunity to have their say on the issue.
