On Luck Chinese Nursing Home Extension Soil Turning Ceremony
Saturday, 24 September 2011
I am delighted to participate in this soil-turning ceremony for the extensions to the On Luck Chinese Nursing Home.
It has been my pleasure to support this home from the days when it was just a dream in the minds of the leaders of the Chinese community. I was particularly delighted to be able to support its building when I was the Aged Care minister.
Despite many challenges over the years, the Home today provides care for 60 elderly people, including 15 with dementia.
On Luck is a nursing home set up by the community for the community. It caters for the linguistic, cultural, spiritual, dietary and health needs of Chinese seniors, the average age of who is 86 years.
There remain unmet needs of the community for aged care, hence these extensions, which will provide an additional 60 beds.
I look forward to the completion of the project.
I congratulate all involved, especially the Board members of the Chinese Community Social Services Centre who have successfully steered this project for many years, and whose efforts have established a first-class, modern caring facility for so many elderly people.
How we care for the vulnerable, especially the young and the elderly, is the mark of a compassionate and caring community.
In this project, we witness practical care for many elderly people.
I look forward to its completion.
