Manningham Council
I am honoured to receive this recognition by the Manningham Council.
It has been a privilege to have served the residents of Manningham for three decades
While parts of Banyule, Maroondah and Nillumbik - and now Whitehorse – have been in the Menzies electorate over the years, it has been essentially the Manningham municipality.
I was first elected when the municipality was Doncaster Templestowe, which had four Mayors - before the Commissioners and the creation of Manningham
Since then, there have been 27 mayors - and numerous councillors.
All levels of government have significant roles. I always tried to respects the different responsibilities- and not to interfere with the responsibilities of the others.
The corollary is that residents are best served when we can work together, as it often requires collaboration to achieve results.
I was able to work well with the council over the decades, regardless of political affiliations or none.
Most of all, I sought to support the many organisations and individuals who build community.
The Menzies Community Australia Day awards were a particular manifestation of that commitment with more than 1,200 people being recognised for their voluntary work for our community.
I wish the council well in its ongoing responsibilities and thank you again for this recognition.
